After the Goodbye

Holding Space for the Business of Loss
When grief meets responsibility, you don’t have to carry it all alone.
Grief is already heavy. But after someone we love dies, we’re often handed more weight: paperwork, decisions, deadlines, and questions we never imagined answering. In the days and weeks that follow a loss, you may find yourself signing documents with tears in your eyes or trying to write an obituary while your heart is breaking.
This month, I’m shining a light on something we don’t talk about enough: the business of loss. From navigating funeral decisions to locating a death certificate, the logistical side of death can feel cold and overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. That’s why I created a video series called “After the Goodbye: What Happens Next?” It’s a compassionate, practical guide to help you move through the necessary next steps at your own pace, with clarity and care.
5 Steps to Writing a Meaningful Obituary
When someone we love dies, words often fail us. And yet, we’re asked to write something that sums up their life—a final tribute. It’s no small task. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Here are 5 key points from my video on writing an obituary with heart:
1. Start with the Basics
Include the full name, age, place of residence, and date of death. These details help anchor the obituary in fact before emotion.
2. Add Heart to the Story
What made your loved one special? Mention passions, values, quirks, or their role in your family or community. A good obituary doesn’t just state facts—it paints a picture.
3. Mention Survivors and Predeceased Loved Ones
List those left behind and, if appropriate, include loved ones who have passed before. This honors the connections that shaped their life.
Include time, date, and location of services or memorials. If you’re postponing or planning a private gathering, note that too.
5. Include Donation or Tribute Info
If your loved one cared deeply about a cause or community, suggest donations in their memory. This turns grief into a continued impact.
Gentle Reminder: You don’t need to get it perfect. You just need to make it personal. Let your heart guide your words—and take breaks when you need to.

Prompt:
If someone were to write an obituary for me based on how I’m living today, what would I hope they’d say? What kind of impact do I want to leave behind?
Write freely, from the heart. You don’t need perfect words—just honest ones.
