Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Honoring and Supporting Families

October marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the profound pain of parents and families who have faced the heartbreak of losing a pregnancy or an infant. Whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn, these losses affect thousands of families every year. Yet, despite how common these experiences are, they remain some of the most silent and misunderstood forms of grief.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and the loss of a baby—whether through miscarriage or in infancy—is no exception. Pregnancy and infant loss are particularly devastating because they represent not only the loss of a child but also the loss of a future.

When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them.

Miscarriage affects about 1 in 4 pregnancies, while stillbirth impacts 1 in 160. The causes can range from chromosomal abnormalities, health complications, preterm birth, or unexpected medical conditions. For many, the grief of these losses can be overwhelming, leaving parents feeling isolated, confused, and heartbroken. Adding to their burden is the fact that the public often doesn't fully understand or acknowledge these losses, making it difficult for grieving parents to openly share their sorrow.

This month provides a vital opportunity for us to break that silence. At Mending Piece by Piece, we aim to raise awareness about the emotional and psychological toll all loss takes on individuals and families and this month we are reflecting, remembering and raising awareness on pregnancy and infant loss.

On October 15th, we observe Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day with the Wave of Light—an international event where families light candles at 7:00 p.m. to remember the babies who are no longer with us. This shared moment of reflection unites people across the world in solidarity, helping to bring light to those walking through the darkness of grief.

As a community, we have the opportunity to extend our hearts and hands to those who need it most. This October, we invite you to join us in showing compassion, starting important conversations, and helping to break the silence surrounding pregnancy and infant loss. Together, we can create a space where grief is not only acknowledged but embraced with understanding and support.

Let us honor the memories of the little ones gone too soon and provide a source of hope and healing to the families who continue to carry them in their hearts.

This month is a time to shine a light on the painful reality many families face.
